It is seven years after the end of Venom and Song and Jett's death.
The story begins when Eleabor Thrain, an Elven cemetery caretaker, discovers that a tomb has been robbed by what he originally believes to be a Gwar. The viewpoint then switches to Kat's mother, distraught over the loss of her daughter. She is pulled over by a police officer, hears Kat's voice from Allyra and is puzzled when the police car and the officer seem to disappear.
In Allyra, Kat, Jimmy, Kiri Lee, Autumn and Johnny are planning a birthday party for Tommy when he walks in. They are able to hide their planning scrolls before he sees them, however, and they are able to make him leave without giving away what they are doing. Later, Kiri Lee is alone in her chamber, brushing her hair, and she sees a shadowy figure behind her, the glass mirroring both their silhouettes. She tries to use a deadly fighting technique called Mandiera on him, but then realises that he is really outside the window. He smashes the window and grabs her hand, but when she screams, he releases her and leaves.
Kiri Lee believes it is Jett who broke the glass, but the Elven Lords and Eldera Goldarrow think she is wrong. They decide to visit Jett's grave and subsequently travel to Innskell, where Eleabor Thrain works. Eleabor has realised that it is Jett's grave that was ransacked, but does not tell the Lords of Berinfell, and they appear to believe him and leave.
Eragor, a General in the command of the new Spider King, Asp Bloodthorne, is on Earth, inside one of Asp's fortresses in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Sent to capture slaves from Yellowknife Military Base, he destroys the base and takes the humans captive with ease.
In Berinfell, Tommy is irritated that he has to be at a mandatory Lords meeting, and he goes the long way to the Great Hall through the cavernous, high-ceilinged chamber with three acres of living trees called the Ailianthium. However, he feels that something is wrong, and is then attacked by several shadowy figures in the dark. After competing with them for a while using Mandiera, he is overcome and then finds out that his assailants are the other five Elven Lords and warriors of Berinfell, including Grimwarden. Unknown to him, he had run the Gauntlet on his Threshold Day, the twenty-first birthday of each Elf.
The Elves have prepared a surprise party for Tommy, and in the middle of a dance, they are suddenly interrupted by three mysterious figures, who turn out to be Taladrim, and the visitors talk of an attack on Taladair by the Spider King's army. The Elven Lords and the Taladrim visitors leave the party and talk of the invasion. Taeva, the princess of the Taladrim, tells her story…
The East Wall sentries are watching and see a peculiar storm building power. They signal that a storm is fast approaching, but the captain changes the warning to that of attack! The Taladrim warriors gather their weapons and don their armour, readying themselves for the invasion, while shields of coral seal the island of Taladair from the storm and the attacking army.
However, a figure breaks through the coral, slides down a rope, and is attacked by the warriors. After slaying many of them with no apparent wound, the centurion warriors surround the figure, who wants Taladair's aid in defending his people. The figure turns out to be Asp Bloodthorne, the new Spider King, and he brings Taeva up to the top of the domed coral shield. When she will not go with him, he tells a Gwar warrior to send her back through the hole to a bone-shattering death. She forces the Gwar into the hole with her and lands on his body at the bottom, cushioning the landing somewhat, but her ribs are broken and she suffers massive bruising. When she wakes up, she tries to warn the Taladrim that Asp is planning to destroy the city, but the arc stones Asp has placed around the dome explode, burying the island underwater. Taeva and her assistant, Louwin Siir, build a craft from pieces in her tower chamber above the waterline, and they sail south to the main continent of Allyra.
The Lords of Berinfell, after hearing Taeva's story, send scouts out to verify it, while they summon the Conclave of Nations to meet in three days.
At the Conclave, the Nations decide not to go to war. Out of the six race leaders and the General Secretary, Sardon, Gwar Overlord Bengfist, Taladrim Princess Taeva, and Elven Lord Tommy Bowman vote to go to war, and Saer Magistrate Forlarn, Vault Minister Ghrell, and Barrister King Migmar vote against. As the vote is tied, Sardon votes, and he votes against going to war.
On Earth, Gwar pilot Caerfasz attacks a Texas stadium and takes ninety thousand human prisoners.
